About this deal

Martin O'Neil is a serial winner who as a player blossomed and suffered under Brian Clough's abrasive style of management. He made his breakthrough playing for Distillery in Northern Ireland before joining Brian Clough's legendary Nottingham Forest team, becoming one of the few players who made the epic journey from the Second Division to the glory years: winning the First Division championship, two League Cups and back-to-back European Cups. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter. The book will take you through his career from playing in Northern Ireland to being a key part of the team that won 2 European Cups in the 70s, with George Best. Martin O’Neill is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in football with a career spanning more than 50 years. From Shackleton's pursuit of adventure as a young merchant seaman, through his rivalry with Captain Scott, to the two remarkable expeditions to Antarctica that revealed his unrivalled leadership and courage, Fiennes brings the story vividly to life in a book that is part celebration, part vindication and all adventure. That he was able to produce trophy-winning teams and teams capable of playing intelligent, attacking football without compromising on their grit and graft despite the meagre resources available to him, is testament to his footballing intellect, coaching and man-management qualities. As a manager, O'Neill's celebrated leadership of Celtic saw them win seven trophies, including three Scottish Premier League titles; and in England he successfully led Leicester City to two League Cups and Aston Villa to an unprecedented three consecutive top six Premier League finishes. Some are more personal, some more academic, but an essential read for anyone interested in gender studies, writing in Ireland and creative endeavour. Waking up 117 years later, Bob discovers his mind has been uploaded into a sentient space probe with the ability to replicate itself. As Celtic manager between 2000 and 2005, he led that club to seven trophies including three Scottish Premier League titles and the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. Luminous, elegant, haunting - I read it straight through' Philippe Sands, author of East West Street. With Roy Keane as his assistant manager, he oversaw Ireland reaching the Euros for only the third time in their history.

As a manager he took Leicester City to two League Cups, Celtic to seven trophies, and Republic of Ireland to the 2016 European Championship. However, by the time we get to the Sunderland and Republic of Ireland jobs, it does feel as though he is running out of steam. For the first time, Martin O'Neill reflects on one of the most varied and successful football careers in the British Isles. The book starts well, with a good mix of personal and football, but as it goes on seems to become almost a list of football matches, with the personal side almost completely disappearing. Best-selling author Mark Manson brings his signature no-nonsense wisdom back to the subject he started his career covering: relationships. Not your usual unintelligent oaf of a player boasting of his escapades, before ending up in the bankruptcy court as they livein a rented studio flat in Sadsville.

O'Neill moved into club management and took the helm at Grantham Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest. However, at times it felt a little rushed - for example, both his early professional career and how he felt when he won the league with Nottingham Forest seem to be covered very briefly. The management years were enjoyable enough, albeit he was sounding somewhat bitter about it by the end, but it's his playing years that I enjoyed reading about most.I was mainly interested in his managerial career but I ended up enjoying the part of his playing days just as much, particularly his tales with Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. His account of tracing Lien and telling her story is a searing exploration of two lives and two families.

The stories are fantastic - John Motson, legendary football commentator You may also be interested in. With a journey spanning over fifty years, Martin dives into the exhilarating highs of trophies, promotion and World Cup fights – and the painful lows of fan confrontations, boardroom drama, relegation scraps and getting fired. Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. I wonder whether it would've been better for the great man to divide this book into two tomes: one dealing with his playing career and a sequel with his managerial one.

Interesting facts about his footballing life and various influences especially Brian Clough - who he didn’t seem to get on with. It covered his early years as a Roman Catholic growing up in Northern Ireland and following his dream of becoming a professional footballer in England.
