About this deal

My main issue is that I never connected with any of the characters. While I felt for their struggles and inner conflicts, I always felt like an omniscient observer. It was ironic that they were so attached to each other, because I was not attached to them. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Overall the pacing could have been a lot better. It could have had more straightforward storytelling rather than so much exposition and so little action. Yet my brain really appreciated the last 20%, to the point that I raised my rating. A: When I sat down with my very first editor, she asked me which authors I’d most closely associate myself with, and I said David Mitchell and Michael Crichton. I love Mitchell’s big themes, emotional engagement, and compelling world building, and Crichton’s intelligence and foresight. For various reasons over the years I found myself in an action thriller niche, and THE OTHER SIDE OF NIGHT was a conscious attempt at the kind of novel I’d always wanted to write, a thought-provoking, emotionally engaging novel that leaves readers feeling they’ve experienced something new and different. I hope it will be the first of many such stories.

This is such a strange book to try to review, and I mean that. I went into it expecting a mystery/thriller with a big twist...and then basically had to sit on my hands and hang in there for about 80% of the read waiting for that twist to happen.

See a Problem?

In the end, what I thought was a weird story about a creepy murderer, became a touching story that tests the limits of time. Harri Kealty, a disgraced police officer, finds a note that says “Help! He’s trying to kill me!” in the margins of a book at a secondhand shop. Determined to get to the bottom of it despite having been dismissed from her job, Harri enlists her former partner to assist her. But when the facts lead her to ex-boyfriend Ben Elmys, she wonders if she’s gotten him all wrong. Was he a murderer? As clues mount, she begins to follow a path that will result in death. But is the truth one that Harri will even be able to wrap her head around?

A brilliant meta-thriller with huge ideas and even greater heart' – Steve Cavanagh, author of The Accomplice A big-hearted, big-brain, novel that you'll finish in three days and think about for the rest of the year. Wonderful.’ - Stuart Turton, author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn HardcastleA big-hearted, big-brain, novel that you'll finish in three days and think about for the rest of the year. Wonderful.’ – Stuart Turton, author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Turns out David Asha is also dead. Believed to be suicide from jumping off a cliff in his grief for the loss of Beth and now Ben is guardian to their son, Elliott. However, Ben doesn't seem himself, certainly not the man she had fallen in love with. Now he seems unhinged as if he's about to have a mental breakdown and her concern for Elliott grows. This man should not be caring for a child in this state. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story’s incredible twist…like no crime novel I’ve ever read.”—James Patterson For fans of Matt Haig and Anthony Horowitz, an “intriguing and thought-provoking” (Liv Constantine, author of The Last Mrs. Parrish) novel in which the lives of a disgraced police officer, a prolific author, and an upstanding citizen are inextricably bound together by a series of mysterious deaths. Harri is then led to David Asha, whose wife left that mysterious inscription, and finds out that his wife Beth has recently died of cancer....or did she?

Harry Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer team up to exonerate a woman who’s already served five years for killing her ex-husband.In the end, I was left frustrated and disappointed. I don’t know whether I recommend it or not as it appears my opinion is an outlier, so maybe try it but if you aren’t enjoying it don’t rest your hopes with the twist rescuing The Other Side of Night for you. It certainly didn’t for me. Rating of 2 stars. As a novel with many secrets and revelations, did you come up with any of your own theories about the plot and characters as you read? How close to the truth did you come? Q: In many ways, a detective, like Harriet, and a scientist, like the Ashas, have a similar job description. What interested you about these two jobs and made you want to explore them via these characters and this plot? Hamdy produced the feature film, Pulp, which became the first film to ever premiere on the Xbox Video platform. [13]
