About this deal

If you're wondering what my heart felt like immediately after I finished this — the title of this book should be able to provide some insight. The pacing and writing was fantastic. Getting to know more about the characters we already know was so interesting and fun, as well as meeting new ones who became very dear to me by the end.

A Heart So Fierce and Broken (The Cursebreaker Series)

I'm not a fan of the discord between Rhen and his brother. Especially not since I believe that Grey's love for Rhen had a whole lot more to do with breaking the curse in ACSDAL than Harper's had at the time. It feels kind of forced. Did so at the beginning, when I found myself wondering if it might not have been better for Grey to be honest. Unlike him, I wasn't so sure of the fate that would have awaited him in that case. And it certainly feels forced now when Karis Luran (boy, was she one dimensional btw. Same as Lilith. Interesting villains they are not .. and I say that as someone who almost always roots for the villain :/) is dead, and ☆.。.:*pacifist queen Lia Mara*・°☆ is ruling Syhl Shallow. I love how even with all the bad things Rhen was doing, she never left his side and continued to help him cope with his PTSD and everything. I mean after all that happened in the previous book, I'm not surprised Rhen is traumatized from his curse and Lilith. There weren't really many appearances of them in the book, but they were mentioned a lot. My main gripe with this book relates to its characters. Harper was my favorite part of A Curse So Dark and Lonely, but she is hardly featured in A Heart So Fierce and Broken, having been swept to the sidelines in favor of Grey and Lia Mara. The few times that she does appear, she is a shell of her former self. Gone is her fierceness; in its place is meekness. She stands by Rhen while he commits atrocities and makes excuses for his abhorrent behavior. While we are on the subject of Rhen, what became of him in this book? He has done a complete 180, transforming from kindhearted to despicable. All of the groundwork that was laid in the first book to show how much he cares about his people has gone out the window in this book. Further, his invention of the kingdom of Disi to protect his people from Syhl Shallow, which was touted as admirable in A Curse So Dark and Lonely, is portrayed as skeevy in this book. Neither Harper nor Rhen know that Grey and the heir are one and the same. And both are desperate to find their beloved friend. Grey stands guard, and when Harper wakes up, they play with hand-painted cards and play a game called King's Ransom. Rhen comes downstairs, and Harper leaves, leaving Rhen and Grey playing cards. They talk about how Harper doesn't like Rhen and how he managed to get Harper to play cards. To that Grey responds: "I did nothing, I simply just asked."

Jake and Grey had a rough start, with Grey dragging Harper along with Jake and his boyfriend Noah to Emberfall in an attempt to save them from being shot. The two have been at odds, their opinions often colliding. Over time, the two of them grow to respect each other - so much, that Grey sees Jake as one of his best friends. Which brings me to Harper, my girl. She's barely in this book. I kinda expected that, seeing as ACSDAL was mainly her and Rhen's story and AHSFAB was always supposed to be Grey's. But it's still all interwoven. The story could have used a little more of her, or at least of the brave, stunning girl we got to know in book one. Somehow I don't think that same girl would have forgiven Rhen for FLAYING A CHILD, BUT HEYYYY .. that's just me :')) A Heart so Fierce and Broken was truly a continuation of the original story, after curse was broken. It focuses on the character of Commander Grey instead of Rhen and Harper, though they both make appearances and we see what “Happily Ever After” looks like in the Kingdom of Everfall. I think readers will find it interesting to say the least. I'm not even sure what to say about Rhen. Am I truly surprised by his actions? No. That man has gone through some intense shit for literal decades, and while not an excuse, it's certainly a bit of an explanation for the way he feels and acts. No matter how I feel a character inside the book should have reacted to him in light of the aforementioned display of cruelty, I as a reader still find him compelling. Kind of like - dare I say it - Tamlin. Who, surprise, I also don't hate lol. Let's just say this book ended in way that has left me desperate for the next book. D E S P E R A T E.

A Heart So Fierce and Broken: Cursebreaker, Book 2 A Heart So Fierce and Broken: Cursebreaker, Book 2

Despite being the eldest daughter, her mother decided that she would not be the one to inherit the throne, for she had a sweet character, and therefore her mother did not believe her capable of being queen. As result, her younger sister, Nolla Verin was named as heir to the throne. This one is for you, my dear reader. Look in the mirror. You’re a cursebreaker. You’re strong. You’re amazing. You are changing the world by just being in it. And I am so very proud of you.” After she leaves, Lia Mara emerges from the fireplace and they talk for a little bit. Lia Mara remarks on his relationship with Harper but Grey claims that there is nothing there, and that Harper is in love with Rhen.

A Heart So Fierce and Broken - Bloomsbury Publishing

But even though Lia Mara knows she'll never be queen, she is still determined to find a violence-free solution for both kingdoms. Lia Mara was born to Karis Luran, the late queen of Sylh Shallow and an unnamed general. She has one younger sister Nolla Verin; they were both raised by their mother in the Crystal Palace. That’s one thing, though, that Kemmerer does so well. There are hardly any characters between these two books that are solidly good or solidly bad. They each have choices and decisions to make and they have to live with those consequences. It’s not always a happily ever after. This aspect of realism is much appreciated and a little despised on my end. I swear if any of the four die in the next book, I will FOREVER HATE THIS SERIES FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE! Originally a relationship between prince and guard, Rhen and Grey formed a friendship because they spent so much time together fighting the curse, Rhen let himself be tortured so that Grey would be spared. However after finding out they are half-siblings, their relationship becomes more complicated.Noah seems to be the only one who truly has his shit together anymore, and even though he's mostly trapped in side character hell, I found him to be one of my favorite people in general still. Choices are never easy. There are good and bad options, but the most dangerous is to not make any choice at all.” Relationship: The relationship between Lia Mara and Grey was great because it didn't happen instantly and it didn't grow out of nothing. It was obvious that their attraction stemmed from mutual respect and that was an approach that I really enjoyed. I KNOW people do not like love triangles. Hell, I don't need love triangles in 99.998% of cases either, but this might be one of the rare ones where I would have preferred that over what we actually got. Rumored to be the heir, Grey has been on the run since he destroyed Lilith. He has no desire to challenge Rhen–until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother’s violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?
