it’s also still just so much fun to see how they interact with each other and that’s actually becoming increasingly more fun which i didn’t think was possible.

The entire novel is a series of short scenes, swapping back and forth between around a dozen characters. There are some very good action sequences and some interesting events, I especially liked all the lore regarding the priesthood of Mael. tayschreen is the best character here, and i can’t wait to reread the main series and view him with this additional information - his arc was brilliant.The author takes us back to where it all began and how the Malazans forge their empire with their ruthlessness. kellanved proves time and time again just how morally dubious he is, posing the question of just what sort of person can achieve ascendancy, while still having those moments of humanisation that makes him both very interesting and likeable. Kellanved is so fun to follow around with how you absolutely have no idea what he's going to do next.

He is probably in my favorite Malazan characters and apparently he is heavily involved in other Esslemont works so i am really excited for that.Maels origin story…Tayschrenns connection to humanism… this book has left me wanting to read the next 2-3 that have yet to be written. Here in the Ice Wastes and among the islands of Falar, the Empire of Malaz faces two seemingly insurmountable tests - each one potentially the origin of its destruction. This book, and the ones that follow, look at "different paths and different characters' routes and story arcs". There were a few awesome moments, and a few questions answered, but that wasn't enough to make this book memorable . Sadly, the part of the books that felt the least necessary or even relevant to any of the plots was the Crimson Guardsmen plotline.
