The newly released Empire State Building immediately caught my attention when it was announced earlier this year. There was another version of the Empire State Building in the New York skyline set (21028) that LEGO released.Is this set containing 684 identical parts an exercise in frustration, or a meditative glimpse into the life of the professional LEGO Artist? The Empire State Building was completed in New York City, New York (USA), in 1931, where it became the tallest buildings in the world for 39 years. This 360°-displayable model features 4 highly detailed facades, a silver-colored antenna tower and a tiled baseplate depicting Fifth Avenue and the surrounding roads, complete with 6 yellow cabs. This 360°-displayable model delivers an interesting and rewarding building experience and makes a truly iconic centrepiece for the home and office.

This is purely a treat for the person building the model, as you won’t be able to see them when the model is completed. You will also find a whimsical detail embedded in the structure’s base—The team hid 8 Metallic Silver Cheese Graters representing escalators.

Even at its relatively small scale, it manages to capture many of the key details from the actual building. If I was shown this set box seventeen years ago when I was designing my own model, I would have dismissed the notion as an outright impossibility. With a wide range of colours and effects, along with step-by-step instructions to guide you along the way - our light kits are easy and fun to install. This used the 1×2 grille tiles to add a little more detail but the scale was about the same as what was used on the original set. By using hundreds of 1×2 Grille Tiles, the set approaches the level of detail achieved by talented LEGO artists.
