About this deal

It was based on the novel London Belongs to Me by Norman Collins, which was also the basis for a seven-part series made by Thames Television shown in 1977. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.

In fact, Doris has made it clear that she wouldn’t touch him with a bargepole, and anyway people of their class would be as welcome in a suburban tennis club as a masseur with leprosy. This unpleasant man, it later transpires, has an even bigger secret than the fact that he is a liar who preys on lonely women. These diversely ordinary people living at the same address, the other people whose lives they touch, all with their different desires and motives, It's a terrific read for an historical novel. The book I’m reading now is “Tokyo Fiancee”, and it is about a young woman much like Amelie Nothomb, meeting and becoming involved with a young Japanese man. However, the mirroring of wider concerns is perhaps more successfully pulled off in the case of Percy Boon than Mr Josser.

An honest navvy or a coal heaver, however well paid, simply wouldn’t have been allowed across the threshold. London Belongs to Me was a massive popular success when first published in 1945, selling not far off a million copies. The film includes the first screen appearance of Arthur Lowe, who makes a brief and uncredited appearance as a commuter on a train. Fleeing America after a devastating betrayal, she believes London is where she’ll be understood, where she belongs.

Anyone who loves London and enjoys writing about the urban scene in all its complicated variety will enjoy this lovely novel. Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. On reading reviews of London Belongs To Me, one finds that the most common descriptor is ‘Dickensian’, and in this novel Collins certainly demonstrates the ability to typify many of his characters in an onomatopaeic name coupled occasionally with a single defining characteristic – like the obese, junk-guzzling Mr Puddy (pudding, pudgy) complete with an inability to pronounce the nasal consonants; Mrs Vizzard (buzzard, lizard) a dessicated widow, picking a living from her lodgers’ rents and characterised by ‘a pale waxiness, her hair . One of literature’s memorable charlatans, his poverty acute, his powers questionable, Henry Squales, aka Enrico Qualito the medium, is an actor’s gift.A gigantic Dickensian epic about the lodgers in 10 Dulcimer Street, Kennington, in the run up to the Second World War.

The independent-minded quarterly magazine that combines good looks, good writing and a personal approach. But now it’s come to it, Mrs Josser isn’t quite sure she wants to leave London, especially as their daughter, Doris, has decided to get a flat with her hoity-toity friend Doreen from the office, and thinks she’s too good to stop at home with her parents. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. The stories part and interweave and drop and pick up between characters in exactly the manner of a soap opera and just as addictively, so that the domestic drama of "will Mrs Josser like Doris's fiance's parents?

The character is definitely not respectable and you can see how exotic he would appear in pre-war London. Percy’s character is a mix of the romantic – he is hopelessly fixated on Doris Josser, who hardly notices him – and a vicious nihilism, without regard for boundaries or consequences. The main street was an interior set, but additional location filming took place around London, [2] and at Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire. In adjusting for this with Norman Collins’ 736-page epic London Belongs to Me, now reissued in Penguin Modern Classics, I may overcompensate and end up underpraising it instead. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking.
